The heating and cooling costs in my turn of the century house were simply out of control for many years. I often found myself cowering under the blankets in the freezing cold weather because I simply could not afford to turn the heat on. I thought for sure that the only way to lower my bills was to replace my entire unit. However, thanks to an amazing HVAC contractor in my local area, I learned that there were many different ways to lower my bill without investing in a new furnace and air conditioning system. Today I am sitting in a comfortable home with a reasonable energy bill, thanks to the knowledge that contractor shared with me. 4 Reasons You Are Going To Need To Call A Plumber

Calling a plumber is definitely something you are probably going to have to do in your lifetime. However, this doesn't mean that you don't want to avoid it for as long as you possibly can. Having to call a plumber to make plumbing repairs in your home is costly if it's something that is happening often. Here are four reasons you are going to have to call a plumber and what you can do to avoid it:

  1. You Used Drain Cleaner: Many times, when there is a clog, a homeowner will simply turn to purchasing drain cleaner that is found at their local home goods store. The problem with this is that drain cleaners are often only a temporary solution because they aren't very effective. For this reason, the clog that you are trying to fix is just going to become worse to the point where you have no choice but to hire a plumber. At this point, the clog is probably so much worse than it was originally that the repairs will be more extensive and costly. 
  2. You Flushed the Wrong Things: Flushable wipes should be discarded in the trash, not down the toilet. Yes, they are advertised as flushable, but they still do not break down the way that toilet paper does. This is also true of feminine products, which should also be discarded in the trash. This can save you from having to make multiple calls to your plumber to fix a clogged toilet. 
  3. You Didn't Clean the Garbage Disposal: Cleaning the garbage disposal on a regular basis can also help you avoid costly clogs. To clean the drains, simply place ice cubes down the drain and turn the disposal on. What this does is remove all the debris that is stuck on the metal blades so that they can effectively dispose of more gunk in the future instead of it continuing to build until it gets stuck. 
  4. You Don't Clear Your Plate in the Trash: Before rinsing your plate in the sink, you should always be clearing it in the trash. The reason for this is that it helps you avoid putting things down the drain that shouldn't be thrown down the drain, such as excess amounts of oil and large food scrapings that cannot easily be broken down by the disposal. 

When you know these four reasons you are going to have to call a plumber, you know what you can do to avoid the situation. On the other hand, if your drains do have problems, call a plumber rather than using drain cleaner or a coat hanger to clear the clog yourself and potentially doing more damage.
