The heating and cooling costs in my turn of the century house were simply out of control for many years. I often found myself cowering under the blankets in the freezing cold weather because I simply could not afford to turn the heat on. I thought for sure that the only way to lower my bills was to replace my entire unit. However, thanks to an amazing HVAC contractor in my local area, I learned that there were many different ways to lower my bill without investing in a new furnace and air conditioning system. Today I am sitting in a comfortable home with a reasonable energy bill, thanks to the knowledge that contractor shared with me. This site is my way of paying it forward and making sure everyone else knows how they can start saving too.

When Your Home Isn't Warm, What Should You Do?

It can be a scary feeling if you come home to a cold house in the middle of winter or wake up in the middle of the night freezing cold. When it's the middle of winter, it isn't just your heat that can stop working, you could also end up with other issues due to the heat loss, including frozen pipes or mold or mildew growth. If you end up with a problem with your home not getting or staying warm, there are a few things you can do before you call an HVAC company.

Open the Vents for Proper Airflow

Be sure all of your vents are open and that you are getting enough airflow throughout your home. If all of the vents aren't open, you may end up with cool areas of your home. Every vent in your home needs to be open, even in areas of your home where you may not go into, such as spare bedrooms or a basement that you don't use very much. Also, make sure the wall return vents are open as well to promote proper airflow and distribution.

Remove Any Objects Around Your Furnace

You need to be sure your furnace has at least two feet of clearance all the way around the unit. Remove any objects from around the unit, as they can hinder airflow to your appliance and can also be a fire hazard as well. Clear the space around your furnace that may have built up during the past season. Remove objects and clean the area as well to keep dust, dirt, and dander away. Vacuum the area after you've cleaned it up.

Make Sure Your Thermostat Is Working

If you aren't sure if your thermostat is working properly, you can use a thermometer inside your home to test the temperature. If your thermostat is not reading the right temperature, it isn't going to send the right signals to your furnace. If this is the case, you need to replace your thermostat. Older thermostats are unreliable, so if you still have a dial thermostat or even an old digital thermostat, you need to replace it with a new one.
