However, thanks to an amazing HVAC contractor in my local area, I learned that there were many different ways to lower my bill without investing in a new furnace and air conditioning system. Today I am sitting in a comfortable home with a reasonable energy bill, thanks to the knowledge that contractor shared with me. Air conditioning systems that are not properly maintained will be far less capable of effectively cooling the large interior spaces of a home. Clear Exterior Vents

The exterior unit will have a series of large vents on it that will allow the unit to draw in enough air. Prevent The System's Drain From Clogging

This is to allow any rain that gets inside the unit to drain out, and it can also allow for condensation that forms to easily leave the unit. While the drain for the AC unit will be among its most basic components, it can still experience problems due to algae, dirt, and other substances getting inside it. Unfortunately, these substances may not always be easily seen from the outside, which can lead to major clogs forming deep inside the drain. Using a drain auger, you will be able to reach inside the drain so that you can remove any large debris that may have worked its way deep into the drain line.

Keep The Unit's Air Filters Changed

Change the air filters for the HVAC system is one of the most important and basic types of maintenance that you will have to do. It is also among the work that will be needed the most frequently in order to keep the system running smoothly. These air filters will rapidly fill with dust, hair, and other airborne debris. Failing to replace these filters on a regular basis can decrease the airflow into the unit while also reducing the overall air quality as much of the dust may be able to come loose from the filter. In most cases, your air filters will need to be changed at least every couple of months, but you should check them every few weeks to assess whether they need to be changed.
