Maintaining Your Box-Style Air Conditioner

If you have an air conditioning unit installed in one of the windows of your home to keep the room where it is located cool, you undoubtedly want it to work properly at times when the temperature becomes too hot for comfort. There are some steps that are necessary to ensure your unit works as it should at all times.

Take Time To Clean Your Unit Periodically

With the constant running of an air conditioning unit, it will become clogged with debris that is sucked through the ventilation system. It is important to clean out your unit every month or to remove environmental debris so it does not cause the AC's necessary mechanisms to clog.

Unplug your air conditioner and remove the front panel. Use a vacuum cleaner attachment to remove debris. Check that the condensate tubing is not clogged. If it appears gray or green, it likely has a buildup from moisture present. This can easily turn into a mold problem if it is not remedied. Remove the tubing and run water through it for several minutes to remove debris. Dry completely before replacing.

Replace The Air Filter As Needed

In addition to the interior of your unit, the air filter will become clogged with dirt over time. This will cause the air conditioner to need to work harder at cooling your room. You may find that the unit runs more often or that the room does not cool as easily as it had in the past. Remove the air filter and replace it whenever it appears gray. If you have a reusable filter, remove it and run it under a faucet of cool water until there is no discoloration noticed in the filter or water. Allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

Get Your Unit Checked By A Professional

It is wise to have an air conditioning maintenance specialist look at your unit if it is not working up to par. Contacting a service to conduct periodic checks of the unit's capabilities is also important so you do not find yourself without a cooling source. Give a call to an HVAC service before warm temperatures are expected so you do not have to wait too long for an appointment. Springtime is best as these services are usually not extremely busy since their furnace repairs are usually winding up for the season.

Contact a local HVAC service, such as Air Force Mechanical, Inc, to learn more.
